Reichard/2

Defying the expectations of my parents and confounding literary critics everywhere, I've managed to eke out a living as a freelance writer for the last six years. Here are some links to selected works and current projects. Not included are older and outdated projects for other publications, including my Web-software reviews for PC Magazine and Computer Shopper.

Computer Books

Because of the large number of computer books under my belt, I've set up a page specifically covering them. This includes the various offerings of the MIS:Press Slackware Series and my UNIX books.

Online Publications

I contribute to two publications under the internet.com umbrella: The E-Commerce Guide and ServerWatch. For the E-Commerce Guide I write reviews of electronic storefronts, shopping portals, and payment systems. For ServerWatch I write reviews of Web servers, application servers, mail servers, telnet servers, multimedia servers, and more.

I write a monthly Linux column for IDG Books Online.

Magazine Work

Intelligent Enterprise is a monthly magazine covering database management in the enterprise. In the past few years I've contributed a number of reviews, including looks at TopTier, SilverStream and HAHTsite.

Performance Computing is the successor to UNIX Review. I write a regular column, Web Advisor, covering (what else?) the World Wide Web.

My feature travel article on the Northern League cities is (much to my amazement!) the cover story in the May 1999 issue, currently on newsstands everywhere. For my expanded look at Northern League travel, go here.
Internet World
I've written a slew of reviews for Internet World over the last two years, including recent reviews of Ipswitch IMail Server and Marimba Castanet.

Newspapers

Isthmus is the alternate weekly for Madison, Wis. I've written about computing and other topics for Isthmus since 1989. This may seem like a long time for someone to contribute to an alternative weekly, but I'm a relative rookie on the Isthmus scene -- most of the editors have been there for much longer.

The Star Tribune, Newspaper of the Twin Cities, publishes a monthly tabloid called Tech@Work. I contribute a monthly column interviewing an interesting person in the local computing world. Past subjects have included Alan Discount (CEO of Vallon, Inc.), Rick Krueger (president of the Minnesota High Tech Association) and Phil Madsen (Webmaster for the Jesse Ventura for Governor campaign).

Cass Gilbert

{short description of image}
Most biographies take years to write, which gives me hope as I work on a biography of the American architect Cass Gilbert. In the future, you'll be able to follow the link to read more about Gilbert. Promise.
