Description
This is a new Northern League team for 1999, as the transplanted Thunder Bay franchise moves to the affluent Chicago suburbs -- affluent enough to warrant its own Ikea store. Schaumburg Stadium was under construction when this article was written, so it's impossible to say how well the new ballpark works. On paper, it looks similar to Fargo's Newman Outdoor Stadium -- no surprise, as Flyers General Manager John Dittrich was also responsible for launching the RedHawks franchise -- with one twist: there's open seating down the right-field line where fans will be encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets.

In many ways Schaumburg will host the most unique stadium in the Northern League. It's at a busy freeway interchange and will share a parking lot with a major commuter railway station, with absolutely nothing (restaurants, bars, hotels) within walking distance. The hope, of course, is that some of these commuters will be enticed into watching a game after work instead of heading straight home.

Definitely call ahead for tickets. The Flyers averaged more than 7,000 fans per game in the season-opening series with the Saints and have sustained that momentum well into the season. It looks like the Northern League has again struck gold.

Parking
There's a ton of free parking in the lot shared with the train station.

Before/After the Game
Schaumburg is strictly a bedroom community. There's no downtown per se, and there's definitely no entertainment district. Your best bet is to take in a game and then head into downtown Chicago for some entertainment.

Where to Stay
Since Schaumburg Stadium is at a major commuter-rail intersection, you could stay in downtown Chicago and take the train out to a game. If you want to stay in the general area, the major hotel chains are represented: Embassy Suites (1939 N. Meacham Rd., 847-397-1313), Country Inn and Suites (1401 N. Roselle Rd., 847-839-1010) and Marriott (50 N. Martingale Rd., 847-240-0100) are all within a short drive of the stadium.
